Chapter Eleven

As I left Sweet Dreams, I checked the clock on my phone. The root canal should be over by now. I sent a text to Granger to check on him. I slid behind the wheel of the car and was relieved to see my phone light up with his picture.

“How are you?” I asked.

“Missing your beautiful face. When will I see you again?”

His voice sounded funny. “Are you okay?”

“I’m terrific. If it weren’t for mouth surgery, I’d be wherever you are.”

“Is your mother still there?”

“Nope. Told her I was a big boy and I could take it from here.” He grinned. “Look. My mouth is working again. It’s a miracle.” He demonstrated the opening and closing of his jaw.

I laughed. “Granger, by any chance did Dr. Kozak give you special medicine?”

“I don’t think so. Why? Do I sound special?”

I smiled at the phone. “Not at all. Get yourself into bed.”

“Why? Are you coming over to join me?”

I’d been planning to stop by Dusty Acres, but it seemed my boyfriend needed a little TLC first and I was only too happy to oblige.

“I’ll see you in a few minutes.” I tossed the phone in the cupholder and hit the gas.

I let myself in through the front door and found my boyfriend tucked in bed under a crisp white sheet. His eyes were closed and I wondered whether he’d managed to fall asleep in the few minutes it took me to get here.

Sensing my presence, he popped open one eye and looked at me. “There’s my girl.”

I perched on the edge of the bed. “Looks like your mother took good care of you today.”

“She’s the best, second to you, of course.”

I curled beside him on the bed. “How are you feeling?”

“Sleepy but glad to see you in the flesh.” His mouth quirked. “Hey, can I see your flesh?”

“Later. When you’re not high as a broomstick. I spoke to Gwen, Zed’s younger daughter.”

“How’d it go?”

“She mentioned that Zed transferred the deed of their family home to the twins and then Gina managed to lose the farm. I think Dusty Acres might be the property that Zed spoke to the lawyer about.”

“Dusty Acres,” Granger murmured, his eyes closing. “Sounds like the place for you. You’re not much of a cleaner.”

First Jinx, now Granger. Whatever. It was true. My cleaning skills were right up there with geometry and cooking from scratch.

“I’m going to drive over there when I leave here and see what I can find out.” I brushed my lips against his cheek. “You rest and I’ll stop by when I’m done to check on you.”

He spoke with his eyes closed. “You’re so pretty when you’re sleuthing. I hope to see your pretty face soon.” His voice took on a dreamy quality.

“Can I get you anything while I’m here?” There were no obvious needs. A full glass of water sat on the bedside table.

“Dr. Kozak is a hero.”

“I’m sure he is.”

He rolled toward me and opened his eyes. “I forgot to ask how things panned out with Marley.
